Years ago I began interviewing friends of mine… Makeup artist, talent and company reps and writing about it on my website, www.hauteZine.com. I wanted to share withe public the amazing world of creation that so many of us in the “industry” take for granted…to my surprise… People responded, smash cut to the present and after years of doing this lo-tech (before Facebook, twitter, WordPress, iPhones and iPads) i am starting where I left off…so please bare w me as I acclimate to this new digital world…

Concealer

Foundation Blending

– Sam spent at least an hour blending foundations, he used 3 shades one as close to her complexion as possible, one somewhat lighter and another darker, in addition he used sheer pigments in brown and black to enhance these colors. Sam uses his foundations to shape the face specifically the forehead, he created a halo effect by blending black pigment into the foundation to shade and accentuate the forehead of his model.

Blended!

– blending is crucial when wearing any cosmetic product but particularly foundation. Sam recommends using your fingers, body heat warms up the foundation making it easier to blend.

Highlighting

- Sam goes back In and adds Studiofix in lightest shade of the 4 colors he’s chosen for Rosie.

Contouring Reverse Technique

- Light color to define placement of darker contour color.

After contour and blush

- another application of highlighter (Sam believes in blush and uses 3 shades on Rosie all true colors, orange and pink blended together to create a beautiful deep coral, and raizin for the contour)

No body does it better than this, to master this application Get The Book and study it.

- Sam demonstrated 2 different looks one (the right eye) is what he called an “open” eye this is characterized by use of a light base shade all over lid, contouring in the crease plus lashes and liner, for work or every day you can skip the lashes, for nite add a frost to the base color something that shimmers (Newest look for the millennium)

For the day and for a more natural eye

- keep base shade just a 1 or 2 shades lighter than your complexion. He also lines the inside of the lower eye with white pencil to add to the illusion of openness.

The other look (left eye) is dark and dramatic

- Sam achieved this by layering colors on top of each other starting with the black pigment powder and finishing with the Mac glitter, you can play with the colors of glitter for this look if you are daring, he chose the white glitter but blue or green could work as well, he lined the bottom lid with black shadow/pigment powder and the upper lid with black liquid liner.

Choosing a Foundation
One of the most common problems I hear voiced from my clients (and most women and performers) is “I can never find a foundation that matches my skin.” OK here is the answer. There is no such thing as one foundation to match any complexion. I sometimes use up to 3 different colors to get the “perfect match.” I suggest you purchase 2 colors. One slightly lighter (your color in the winter) and one somewhat darker or warmer (your color in the summer). Then use these colors in combination to create one that more closely resembles your own. Remember your face is not one color. The area around your eyes and nose for people of color is usually lighter than the color on the forehead and chin. All skins have an undertone of either red/orange or yellow/olive, so be sure to purchase foundations with these combinations.

Working with 2 colors is the best way to overcome the frustration of foundations that stop working at certain times of the year. Like summer and winter when your own natural complexion changes.

With 2 colors you want to start with the lighter of the 2 (your winter color) and begin by applying it around the eye area, the nose and around the mouth.

Now begin blending the darker color of (your summer shade) foundation on your forehead, chin and cheeks working them into the lighter foundation around your eyes, nose and mouth. The key here is to BLEND !!!!!

Blending is what separates the pro’s from the wannabes!

The results of this type of foundation application when done correctly is a face that looks brighter and more open. Try it and let me know what you think.

Determining Your Undertone
What about undertones? Well like I’ve said in the past, no face is only one color. What we see when we look in the mirror is a combination of the upper dermis (top layer of skin) and some of whatâs going on under the skin (dermis) Like high circulation which can cause ruddiness and hyper pigmentation (patches of red or broken capillaries) or lack of circulation which leads to blotchiness and dark circles (discoloration and uneven skintones). Most skins fall into 2 categories regardless of nationality. Olive/yellow and red/orange. Basically warm and cool….Olives = cool…..Red = warm.

To determine your undertone look at the underside of your wrist…what do you see? Look at the lightest part. If it is yellow and somewhat olive or green you fall into the cool category and if you see red or copper you are warm. What is the significance of this? By understanding your undertone you begin to educate yourself about color and what that means is… no more agonizing over what lipstick color to buy or eyeshadow or foundation. Think of the money you’ll save. Oh yeah! When testing the color of foundations, what you want to match is your neck, use the wrist to check for the undertone. As a rule warm colors look good on everybody and for a more dramatic effect you use cool shades. There… I’ve given the basic formula for doing make-up. Simple right?? Well, yes but not always easy. Here is a list of cool and warm colors.

Foundation Formulas

There are a few other considerations when purchasing foundations namely their formula. Now most women stick to one type. You either wear liquid or cream. The only problem with this is…Skin !!! It changes. Just like the weather and as a matter of fact weather is exactly what can effect the looks of your make-up and one of the reasons to have more than one formula. “Oh no, not more information!”…Oh yes!!! Information equals empowerment. No more cosmetic counter nightmares. Now some basic info, there are 4 types of foundation and each one gives a different finish and type of coverage.

Why do you need different formulas? You ever wonder why you break out when you wear foundation??? Wrong formula. Foundation used correctly can actually help your skin. That’s right. The sunscreen and moisturizers protect your face from pollution and over exposure to sun. Here are some basic rules regarding formulas:

Creams- more dewey finish with full to heavy coverage. Only for serious discoloration during the day, use this at night or for those special occasions when you want a dramatic effect, or apply only in the areas where you need the coverage. Especially in the summer months… this heavy hitter looks it’s best in cool temperatures.

Liquids- can vary in finish depending on base (with oil or oil-free) medium to light coverage. Great for day/office wear in the cooler drier months. Lighter formulas can be worn in the summer months.

Cream powders- which are a combination of powder mixed with foundation, more matte finish, light to medium coverage. These are great for women who don’t like to wear foundation. It gives you a pulled together look with out a lot of fuss. I use this when Iâm running errands or just wanting to look cute and natural. Great year round but especially in the summer.

Tinted moisturizers or Treatment foundations- dewy finish with little coverage. Great in the summer or for around the house (if you have a man) and of course for those of you (like me) who donât like to wear a lot of make-up but want to look pulled together.

Professional tips for eyebrow tweezing:

1) When brows have been over tweezed, it’s best to grow hairs back completely before going to a professional for repairs.

2) Have brows done by a professional first than, tweeze hair every other day. This way you will maintain the original shape of the brow, before the hairs grow back.

3) Invest in a pair of manicure scissors. Before tweezing, comb hairs upward and trim any long hairs that extend beyond your brows.

4) When filling in eyebrows, use powder instead of pencil. It gives a softer look to the brow.

5) Choose color that is one shade lighter than brows.

6) Purchase a firm, angled, eyebrow brush to give brows a natural look.

7) Invest in a good pair of tweezers. I recommend Tweezerman with the stainless steel slanted tip. Priced between $15 to $20.

Treatment

Philosophy “Kiss Me”

Foundation

Cover lips with a light application of foundation and blot. Foundation on the lips will even out any discoloration on the lips and create a clean palette to work with making it much easier to create an even lip line.

Powder

Use loose translucent (no color) powder on a puff and press lightly into lips. Take the excess off with a large brush. Powder sets the lip and keeps lipstick from bleeding.

Liner

Line the lips with a lip pencil in a color slightly darker than your lipstick color.

Blend

Using a small brush blend liner towards the middle of the lips.

The techniques that I used in this demonstration are all of the possible steps you can take when doing your lips. Not all of them are appropriate for everyday. Use them to create a look that works for you. (Don’t skip the artist tips)

I’ve included pictures of Jazsmin in a number of the seasons hautest new looks I created these looks by using the same steps that I have demonstrated and simply changing the colors. You wil find the products listed in the Haute-Stuff section of this zine.

I’ve also used products by some companies that may surprise you. In the future you can look forward to more information on cosmetics companies that have products that compliment ethnic skins. HauteZine.com went behind the scenes of the first annual charity fashion show hosted by the students of Beverly Hills High. The proceeds from the event went to the Vahagn Setian Charitable Foundation, an organization founded by the students in honor of their fallen student, Vahagn Setian. All of the makeup used on the students and for the charity auction was donated by a host of big hearted cosmetics companies (Hautelines)  All of the makeup artist in attendance, IATSE Local 706 Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Union and the cosmetics companies, volunteered their time for this great cause. And all of the models were from the student body of Beverly Hills High.

Lipsticks
How to get lipsticks to last all day? Well there are a few things you can do but, of course, short of tattooing your lip color on permanently, if you eat, drink, and talk it’s gonna move. Here are a few tricks of the trade:

1) Start with clean moisturized lips, get in the habit of putting on lip balm at night, dry lips will absorb what ever you put on them, including your lipstick.

2) A light application of foundation and powder can give your lipstick something to hold on to and help extend the wear. You can also look into lip bases that do the same thing. Elizabeth Arden lipfix is one.

3) Lipliner applied to entire lip before your lipstick will double the length of time that it wears. This tip comes from the porno industry… sorry.

4) The drier the formula the longer lasting the color, the flip side is dry lips, sometimes it’s one or the other (refer to answer number 1)

5) Blotting excess lipstick, powdering lightly and reapplying will help also, kind of like building up the color.

Of course, there are some companies with products that work better than others. I will do a more in-depth report on this topic in the future, but in the meantime check out the Haute-Lips story with Jazmin Lewis.

Sam’s professional tips for daily make-up application

Here are some of the tips and techniques anyone can implement in the daily make-up routine.

Foundations:
Blending is key. You can never over blend your foundation. In fact, since the face is a “color” and you are adding color, the more you blend, the more you allow the skin to warm the pigment on your face and you will get a better sense of the color.

Tips:

• Sam uses concealer under the foundation.
• Use more than one foundation color on different parts of the face (i.e. darker on the forehead where the skin is the darkest area of the face).
• Start the blending process from the chin up.
• The outer perimeter of the face is the most consistent in color and texture therefore, less powder in these areas, more in the center of the face.
• Powders should coordinate with the coverage colors, therefore if you use a darker color on the forehead, the powder should be darker than what you might use elsewhere.
• Use one ply of a tissue to “blot” the face before applying powder. This will absorb the excess oil from the foundation and you will use less powder.

Color:
“Color for women of color is not necessarily deep color”. Deeper pigments do not automatically warrant rich colors. Depends on the look that one is trying to achieve.

Tips:

• Blend and layer different colors on top of each other. Sam illustrated this by applying a bright pink blush on top of a very warm blush.
• Find great basic colors that you can mix and match. (see Haute-Stuff for colors used)

Brows:
Well-groomed brow will always allow your make-up look more polished.

Tips:

• Use M.A.C clear brow gel to stand brows up and get a clean look.
• Manipulate brows after you done shadow and blush
• Use pencil to “draw” the shape of the brow and use powder to fill in.
• Don’t be afraid to use lip-liner in the brow. Sam used M.A.C’s Chestnut lip-liner in the brows and later on the lips.
• Coordinate brow color with the type of shadow look you want. If you have a Smokey eye, the brow should be deep. A more open eye look would require a lighter brow or bleached brow.

Eyes:
Eyes are the focal point of the face. This is where you create drama.

Tips:

• Line the inside of the eye with white pencil for an open eye look.
• Line the inside of the eye with a dark pencil for a Smokey eye look.
• Use powder shadow as liner under the lower lashes instead of eye pencil. Eye pencil gets warm with the body and can melt and smear
  

Overall:

• Every line has something to offer urban women. Search, look, and explore!
• Start!
• Open yourself up to try new things!
• Practice, practice, practice!

People always want to know what the best product is. In our desire to be all that we can be, folks are looking for the magic pill that will do all things, well…not to be the bearer of bad news but…you guessed it there is no such thing. What does exist are products and companies that are great and can make your life easier, the question to ask is what are your personal needs. Determining what your specific beauty/fashion needs are will make you a more informed consumer and less gullible to the “latest greatest” item or trend. For example is your priority:

- convenience or luxury?
- Value or indulgence?
- classic or contemporary?
- Is time a factor?
- what is your skill level?

Just to name a few, there are products that feed your senses and empty your pocket book (you know what I mean). There are colors that are fashion forward but will require a good deal of skill to master the application of (time) and some attitude as well (it’s not easy to pull off silver frosted lips)

Just because it looks cool doesn’t mean it will look cool on you. Narrow your request down to what your needs are. “What would be the best cleanser for an active women with oily skin and limited income?” Now that’s a question I can get with.

The best brands for women of color?

Boy, have times changed since I was a child. Who would have thought that we would have choices? Well the beauty industry is finally recognizing how much money we spend. Yes “dollah dollah bills y’all!” So now everybody is making sure that their cosmetics include a fuller range of colors, unfortunately that usually means 1 light yellow, 1 cafe mocha and 1 black as pitch foundation and God help the rest of us. But there are some companies that have a vast array of colors and formulations for everybody, here is a list of my favorites:

Iman by far has the best powders and foundation colors on the market thus far as well as some pretty cool formulations. My favorites are the creme to powder foundations and her pressed powders. Now you’re not going to get the fabulous packaging you get with YSL or Versace, but the price is right and the value is there.

Black Opal and Face, two newcomers to keep an eye on.

Prescriptives, Origins, Clinique and Estee Lauder. Check them out. They have some cool stuff right now, both in skincare and makeup.

Benefits cosmetics, behind the times with the foundations, but lipsticks, pencils, shadows and treatment are the bomb.

Smashbox If you suffer from shiny face syndrome nothing beats their anti-shine makeup used as a treatment for shine, not foundation. Great lipsticks and some pretty cool eyeshadows too.

Loral deserves big ups for their new lipstick colors…Abu!!!

MAC, of course, but they are starting to work my nerves with these new colors in the foundation and powders. I think their new system is confusing.

Bobbie Brown cosmetics…. the list goes on, write me with the specific companies you’re interested in and I will do a report on them.

Shortcuts

Short on time but not on beauty pride? Got to look good but also got to get out the door? Here are a few things that I have found that can get you there in a hurry.

Fast to fabulous

1. Flawless Skin in a minute- Cream to powder foundations, they are foundation and powder in one step, great for quick touch ups after work, or when you only have a minute to get it together. There’s enough coverage to give you a finished looked with little effort. Best brands: Mac studio Fix, Lancome Dual finish, Origins As Good As It Gets and Iman.

2. Bronzers- I use these as blushers, eyeshadows and for shading. Get yourself a really pretty one that’s warm and deep enough for your complexion. Check out Iman and Givenchy. Brush on the cheeks and eyelids and you are out the door.

3. Lipliner as lipstick- get definition and long lasting color in one. You can also create a few different lip looks by adding a good lip treatment (my personal favorite is Kheil’s Lip Balm)

4. Fast Eyes- use your under eye concealer (a shade lighter than your complexion) as eye shadow. Cover your entire lid, follow up with a little bronzer or blush and line the top lids just on the outer edge, smudge and add mascara. Voila!!! Good concealers: Joe Blasco Natural Blue Neutralizer #2 or 3, and California Cosmetics compact. Check out Mari Marrow’s makeover in the Haute-stuff section.

5. Glamorize- How to go from blah to fabulous in a minute. Get yourself a pot of frosted powder, gold for a warm look, silver for a cool dramatic look and add the powder to you eyelid, lips, and brush a little on your cheekbones and chest. The Bomb! Go to the beauty supply for this one, it’s a bit of a trend so don’t spend too much (tip: check out the art supply store also).

Haute-Zine is on the scene behind the “screen” bringing you what’s new and hot!

No stranger to the entertainment world, Malcolm-Jamal Warner is one of the few actors in Hollywood who can boast a career that began over 15 years ago. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey Malcolm-Jamal began acting at a very young age.

HZ: What drew you to acting?

MJW:“I was 9-years-old and willing to do anything to keep my mother’s foot out of my ass. She was always looking for things for me to do besides going to school, hanging out, and trying to get into trouble. She tried a lot of different things, but theater was what stuckat might have had something to do with the curtain calls,” he smiles.

Regarding his early influences: “I have my mother, father, God and Bill Cosby to thank for my success.” Say’s Malcolm-Jamal . “Seeing my mother and father work so hard instilled in me a healthy work ethic at a very young age. Growing up watching Mr. Cosby working hard despite his success totally solidified that work ethic for me. Success in this business is not so much about achieving, but sustaining over the long haul.”

HZ: What were you like as a child?

MJW:“In grade school I was the dreamer, the talker and the kid learning that to be a leader you have to also know how to listen. My father used to tell me that the less you talk the more you are able to observe and to learn.”

Such early success alone is worthy of noting, but add to it the fact that Malcolm-Jamal is still in his 20′s and we begin to see one of the many facets of this diamond in the rough. Rough only because of his relative youth. Malcolm-Jamal ‘s talents are still being excavated, few people are aware that in addition to acting and being one of “Malcolm and Eddie’s” resident directors, Malcolm-Jamal is also a spoken word artist as well as musician. His band, “Miles Long,” in which he plays electric and upright bass, has been performing all around the Los Angeles area to packed houses.

MJW:“Our vibe has been labeled ‘jazz/funk’, but we’ll go from Living Colour to John Coltrane in the same show. The album will reflect that diversity.”

If that is not enough, he and his partner/labelmate, Lionel Cole, have just recently formed, “the wonder factory,rg”, a record label which features other alternative artists in addition to “Miles Long.”

MJW:“Aside from the jazz/funk sounds of my band, our artist roster ranges from The Lionel Cole Quintet (Imagine Al Green meets The Dave Matthews Band) to the pop/soft rock melodies of cellist, Cameron Stone. Because my entire livelihood doesn’t rely on how many records I sell, I’m in a fortunate position where I get to really be an artist and I want to share that with other artists that I believe in. There’s a certain musicality that 1s missing in most popular music today and I envision “the wonder factory, rg” as a safe haven for artists who don’t want to compromise their art for the sake of getting a record deal.”

“I’ve been involved in music all my life.”

Malcolm-Jamal ‘s musical tastes tend to be diverse. “Musically, my influences are Charles Mingus, Paul Chambers, Earth,Wind and Fire, Miles Davis, War, Gil Scott Herron, Brand New Heavies and Led Zeppelin.”

HZ:How much control do you have over your music?

MJW:“A tremendous amount, we all do”, referring to the other members in his band. “One of the reasons we started “the wonder factory” was so that we didn’t have other people dictating to us what our voices are. I’m very aware of the stigma attatched to actor/musicians so I wanted to take the time to make the album sound exactly the way I want it to. Every bit of my heart is in this record and it’s going to surprise a lot of people.

When asked how he feels about his music: “Until recently, it’s been rather difficult for me to embrace the concept that I am an artist.. I’ve been a working actor for almost 20 years and a working director for about 11 of those years. As an adult, I’ve realized that the acting, directing, writing, poetry and the music are all the same to me: avenues with which I can express my creativity. This is the first time since I was 9-years-old that I’m doing something soley out of the desire…”

	Before I started acting I supported myself..
	..My most interesting job was this computer job where I was supposed to keep people on-line for as long as I could. I would pretend to be different people depending on the person I was chatting with. I pretended to be a man once, I became my boyfriend, 6’1″ .. and I think the woman on the other end fell in love with me. She cried when I told her I was leaving the company.

	The most luxurious thing I have ever done..
	..is spending my birthday at the Beverly Hot Springs. I laid on a table and was washed all over then I took a shower and was washed again with oil and a milk wash. I think I changed a whole shade lighter. I definitely want to do that again.

	..I shampoo then condition, rinsing quickly so most of the conditioner stays in. Then I put Frizzes Extra Strength then Infusium 23 hair treatment in and comb through it with a wide comb. Then I blow dry it.

		If I had a daughter and she wanted to be an actress..
		..I would support her and guide her. My mother was swindled out of a lot of money. I know from experience that you don’t need to spend lots of money to get an agent and I would protect her

	..5 years old when I looked in the mirror and KNEW I had style. I was “IT”. When I look back at photos, I say, “what was I thinking?”
	In my spare time I..
	..do a lot of charity work. In our business, we have so much free time when we are not working..I am involved with Project Angel Food. We bring food to AIDS patients. I try to bring a friend so I can get more people involved. I like to go out and push AIDS awareness and abstinence. I have practiced abstinence… I went 2 years and 11 months once then I gave in.

Titus is distributed by Fox Searchlight, and was produced by Clear Blue Sky in association with Overseas Film Group. The film stars Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange, Angus McFadyen, Alan Cumming, and Laura Frazier. It is the first major feature film of a Shakespeare work directed by an American since Orson Welles; and the very first to be directed by a woman. Julie Taymor is the Tony Award winning director of THE LION KING, which also won London’s Theatrical Event of The Year. An achievement specifically created to honor her. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Oberlin. She is a recipient of the MacArthur Genius Grant. Her Oedipus Rex with Jessye Norman won for her the International Opera of the Year. It took 5 months to complete principal photography.

Questions: Sometime in June or July of 1998, I received a phone call from my agent at the time. It was concerning, as he put it, ‘some piece filming in Rome Timon or Titus ‘and whether or not I was interested.’ I knew the play quite well. Intimately, in fact. From the very start of Julie Taymor’s production, I had been involved. Through workshops, etc., we mounted an off-Broadway production in 1994, which was a critical year in my life personally, professionally. ’94 really put me through the paces. It was the end of a 10 year relationship, it was the same year that I opted not to screen test for ER so that I could complete the run of TITUS. There were many other things, too. The deaths of a few close friends. All this was happening in ’94. I was a bit sick of New York. I figured that it would be cool to do a little high paying, high profile TV. The old art for the sake of art thing was wearing a bit thin not unlike my socks that I couldn’t afford to replace. I called the theater and told them that I had to be on a plane that night. Couldn’t they let my good buddy (and a great actor) Steve Harris fill in for a day or two? He was willing to do it as a favor to me.

Julie rang up and told me:‘Harry you can’t do that TV show. You have to stay. There is no understudy for you. We would have to shut down. You would really hurt this theater.’‘Yeah,’ I said. ‘But I could buy them a brand new theater if this project goes. It’s supposed to be big.’ ‘No, I’m sorry you can’t go. I’ll get down on my knees and beg you. They’re asking you to fly out tonight? That’s insane. There’s a show on. Don’t they have any respect for the theater?’ ‘In fucking LA? Of course not?
